How relevant are roaming profiles now?

Actually a subject.
Does anyone use roaming profiles in the Win10 + Winserv2016/2019 bundle, as an example of not storing files locally on the PC, but storing everything on the storage system and taking backup only from one piece of hardware where everything is located.
Or it's time to forget about the movable ones and if the capacities allow, then transfer to VDI.

in order not to store files locally on a PC, but to store everything on the storage system and take a backup from only one piece of hardware where everything is located.
this is quite a reason. but far from the only one, far from always the main one.
it all depends on the characteristics of the company. at one of the previous jobs, it was a fundamental requirement that an employee, if necessary, could sit down at any free workplace (of his department, and some in general for any in the office), log in, and get his profile
, including, in case failure of the computer, for any reason, it was customary to remove the backup, flooded and pre-configured system unit from the shelf, replace the faulty computer, and reanimate the workplace within minutes. and with a failed system manager, deal slowly in your department (IT), as well as replenish the reserve))
with such requirements, the technology of roaming profiles does not depend on the calendar in principle
psand also, in addition to backups, we used DFS for transparent migration from server to server (or changing the disk shelf), and background mirroring, in case of a server crash carrying this load. type 24/7, with an increased level of fault tolerance, and minimal recovery time .. something like this

It all depends on the capabilities of the available equipment and the tasks. But in general, the use of roaming profiles, redirected folders, UE-V and VDI is used, but each has its own tasks.
See how much you need it and how convenient it will be.

What has changed in 2019 compared to 2011 for example?
The user needs a workplace and data. The subtleties of building a network do not interest him.
He needs:
- to come in the morning, turn on the wheelbarrow, start the inventory and go into the process, close the inventory in the evening, write a report, turn off the wheelbarrow, leave
- so that in case of failure / breakdown / mask show / any other reason that prevents work - his workplace was restored as quickly as possible
. So, see for yourself whether the roaming profiles are relevant for you or not.
JFYI: Pagers are still used in Russia. In very narrow niches, in very specific conditions - but they use :)

Roaming profiles were as relevant as they are.
They have nothing to do with backup, it makes no difference what to backup.

Or it's time to forget about the movable ones and if the capacities allow, then transfer to VDI.
You can do anything, no one forbids.
In general, they make such a system that meets the tasks set. Without knowing what kind of tasks you have and what requirements it is impossible to say which is better.
