How is the space for data disks of virtual machines on Azure paid?

Good afternoon.
We are testing the possibility of creating and using virtual machines in Azure services for our project. While on a trial subscription.
Everything suits, but the question of paying for the space occupied by data disks (VHD) for virtual machines worries. Is payment made for the entire volume reserved for a VHD file or only for the volume of data stored in this file?
The disk was added by means of Azure, and not loaded manually.

Only for the amount of stored data, regardless of how the disc was created.
