How is REST different from AJAX?

In general, I went to an interview and was asked this question. What are the pros and cons of both approaches?

AJAX is a technology for accessing the server without reloading the page.
REST is a style of software architecture.
Maybe you got something wrong? I doubt that such a question could be at the interview.

Some things are inappropriate to compare. It's just that each technology solves its own problems, and therefore they are needed to complement each other, and not oppose each other. Also, do not trust the interlocutor in his value judgments and agree that you need to look for some differences. For example, they differ in that they do not have the same letters in the name, but are the same in that both names are 4 letters long and both are abbreviations.
In general, do not be discouraged that it did not grow together. It is better to look for those people who, despite your ignorance of some technology, will be able to see what you can and see the potential in you (for sure you have it). Moreover, neither AJAX nor REST exists, they are all parts of one whole. Like continents on the same planet.
