How is data transferred between Nginx and FastCGI?

I understand the meaning of FastCGI: a self-written server is raised, ready to receive and return FCGI, the path to it is written in the nginx config and voila.
Interested in something else: slow and hung connections on nginxe.
Does Nginx buffer input and output for FastCGI transfer, or does it pass directly?
