How is a game like Pokemon GO implemented?

I'm more interested in how difficult it is to develop an application that is similar in functionality to the Pokemon Go game. I myself am not a mobile application developer, and I understand only superficially. It is the approach that is of interest, let's take the development for iOS - what tools you need to have besides the natural knowledge of the PL itself. And is it really difficult to implement such a game? I think that this question may be of interest to many, tk. now, on the wave of popularity, a new trend in development is being set and, naturally, I want to implement something similar in other directions, not Pokemon. I ask the question at the request of a friend who could finance the development and he was very interested in the topic with AG (Augmented Reality).

In this case, AG is simple there, just drawing models to the camera output.
All logic is on the backend, working with google maps and more.
gps is given from the client, the server processes and returns. There is nothing complicated there.
If under IOS, then this is only a client, everything is as usual XCode + model editor, maya for example + you can do all this on Unity for example.
And on the backend, the choice is large.
