How in ubuntu to find out why it is tightly hung?

Hanged tightly ubunta. Only the button helped. How to find out what was the reason? I looked at var/log, but there are a lot of files with hundreds of lines, you can search there for a very long time. And not knowing what you are looking for - even longer.

With a dead hang on the hardware, it is not at all a fact that the system managed to write something to the logs.
The reason may be problems with hardware, problems with drivers, problems with processor modes ... and even problems with software that has consumed resources to such an extent that the interfaces have stopped responding. Everything is the same as on Windows.
