How important is it to have an ssl certificate for a website?

How does an ssl certificate affect the ranking of a site if it is an online service. Do you need https and why. Google writes about https in each of its articles, but how much will the position of the site increase for a relatively expensive certificate.

Https is needed not for ranking in search, but for protecting the data of users who use your site.
If you store any personal data, you have login and authorization forms, and/or you can make purchases, then SSL is a must have!

I agree with Denis Ineshin, an SSL certificate is primarily needed not for ranking, but for protecting user data. Increasing the ranking is more of a bonus, as well as increasing the loyalty and trust of your visitors to you.
Regarding the "drawdown" in the top. A temporary fall is possible, but over time everything will return to its place. It is difficult to say how long this period of "drawdown" will be.
In general, the trend of using SSL certificates, as well as some studies conducted by independent experts, indicate that the use of SSL certificates has a positive effect on the level of resource traffic. According to some studies, there is an increase in attendance on average from 0.5 to 5%.
An SSL certificate is needed when the site contains any scripts/fields for entering visitors' personal data (even email for subscription). And even more so if you use payment systems on the site. Many payment aggregators require the use of an SSL certificate.
About Google, back in 2014, they said that using a certificate would increase their rankings in their search engine, but literally by 1%.

At the moment, the presence of a certificate has practically no effect on ranking: neither in Google nor in Yandex. Rather, the opposite is true: when you go http-> https, there is a possibility of "drawdown" of traffic.
However, this situation is probably not permanent. Google statements will someday translate into actions.

Google is encouraging the move to HTTPS. Yandex makes you wait and writes threats that the site may lose positions (actually not).
But do not expect a strong increase, because the main thing is content. If the site has forms in addition to entering the admin panel, then HTTPS is definitely needed.

SSL - usually needed if there is a reception of money on the site without registration.
Here SSL is free:

https://letsencrypt.org/

Let’s Encrypt CA issues short-lived certificates (90 days). Make sure you renew the certificates at least once in 3 months.

Отвечу кратко:
1. Вводили на клиентском сайте SSL;
2. Просадка по позициям и трафику;
3. Возрврат;
4. Никакого плюса не было.
Однако в ТОП-10 по тематике - все с SSL.
Смотрите на свою выдачу, на маркерные запросы - если по ним сайты с SSL - делайте, будет профит.
