How good/bad is the idea of developing a social network in GitHub?
On the one hand, anyone can make a correction (it's called a commit, or whatever) and so it will be developed by the community. But on the other hand, one fork and project is no longer unique. Of course, the golden mean is when development goes through the version control but only by the developers themselves. What do you think?

It seems to me that no community will write your social network, there are private repositories in the github if you are worried about them.
