How does YouTube speed up the video so that it is still watchable and without sound distortion?
Are there any equivalents for desktops? Maybe you can screw something like this to the MPC-HC?

mpc-hc has not been updated since 18, as mentioned above, you can switch to the same VLC. Have you
already tried this option with a regular accelerator?

Different players can speed up or slow down the video, including the most popular one - VLC. Although it has playback with sound only up to 4x speed inclusive, faster than 4x - without sound (however, already at 3x almost none of the phrases can be disassembled). The speed change step is quite small (not like YouTube), for example, you can set the speed to 104%, 109%, 113%, ..
