How does views return only JSON, but the template is still generated?

Hey!
Here they threw me a project, on django, very large, I need to add a button to one of the pages, and on the button, run the function that I wrote.
But I can not deal with the templates, they are not there as such. All views return JSON data that somehow gets into a template that I can't see.
Basically, I need help with this.
