How does the ping command resolve addresses?

How does the ping command resolve addresses?
Why does ping 127.127.327 respond from 127.127.1.71. It is clear that there is a transfer of part of the value to another octet, but I did not see that this would be clearly described.

@nataku

127.127.327 is one of the valid forms of an IPv4 address. the number after the last dot can be more than one byte if the dots are less than three.
in principle, you can ping at least 2139029831, the effect will be the same.
you can also have some fun with ping 0177.127.1.71.
