How does the computer “understand” what the programmer wants from it?

Good afternoon. I asked myself the question of how the processor understands what to output to the programmer when writing software.
I know that there is an assembler, but the assembler itself is a little bit like a human language.
I roughly understand that the compiler parses the source code and converts it into the necessary codes for the selected language.
But how everything happens exactly at the level of a piece of iron. Is it the dial 010101 0101010 and so on?
What literature to read on this topic.
