How does android register password input to unlock the screen?

I have a service that should cut off the password to unlock the screen (password means any method of protection) and after entering (correct or not) launch the program. So I'm interested in how to actually understand when the password was entered. Is it reflected somehow in the system or is it a separate program and I can not determine if there was an attempt to unlock the screen?
