How do you update windows anyway?

Hello everyone, tell me ... I have a laptop, it was running Win 7 Ultimate, which was later upgraded to Windows 10 Pro (it seems that the build was then 1703). All updates were correctly installed and installed when 1709 came out - it was correctly updated to it, but when 1803 came out - the laptop tried to update every day and received an error like 0x800f0234 (I can’t say for sure because I even cleared the update logs). He tried this way 20 times and no longer offered this update. Current updates (not "Function Update"), but all sorts of cumulative ones - are set perfectly. I have already tried almost all the manuals for update errors (all sorts of diagnostics, checking the system and the update center, their various re-creation of caches and other things), the usual ones are set, but it does not update up to 1803.
The laptop is not exactly old. Not very powerful, but not old (Core i5 4200M, 16GB RAM). There is also enough disk space. now free on the system is about 50GB (I think this is more than enough).

You can try this as a start.
At least give us the exact error code if he gives it again after that.

After tearing off Win7 I was facing the problem of updates not being updated several times. Each time ended with a reinstallation of Windows. I tried many different recipes, but to no avail.

Whether 50 GB is enough to update is not a fact at all.
Why not reinstall the system completely? I am sure that you have already spent more time than is required for a clean installation.

Download the ISO image of the edition you want.
Mount/unpack it.
Run setup.exe from there.
Then the master will tell you everything.
This is how I update machines that have very limited internet access.
You can also try running the command line as an administrator:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Source .
This will help get rid of errors that are associated with corrupted system files. Internet access may be required.
At least this is a standard set of actions in case of system damage.
