How do websites recognize bots?

Search engines sometimes display messages saying that I have a suspicious connection and need to pass a check like the choice of traffic lights in the picture. How do they recognize bots, how do they catch this "suspiciousness"? I want to create my own bot, so I'm interested in how to protect it from such a fate and what algorithm to write if it falls under suspicion.
