How do facial recognition systems work?

I don’t understand a little how they manage to recognize a person even with different emotions, because the muscles of the face move and because of this, with different emotions, they are at different distances relative to each other. What parts of the face are taken into account? Or does it work somehow differently?

it is faces that work,
but with muzzles it is much more difficult, if only because of the position of the eyes,
the face is simple

Yes, just like humans, we somehow recognize anime characters as people, we even consider them beautiful, despite the unrealistic proportions.
