There is a tricky method of coming up with a name: This good option is called "brainstorming with the appropriate stuffing."
“Throwing” is needed because people usually don’t have a strong desire to sit and invent something, and people are usually ready to put up with the “name appointed from above” and enthusiasm in this matter (this is by default, you understand) and a burning desire to “create” arises. Which in this case is bad, because the name of the product should be involved, those who work on it (just like parents come up with a name for their child).
Therefore, the algorithm:
Step 1) Gather the people. You report: now we are going to come up with a name for our software product. Everyone is silent as usual, no one has any options. Maybe someone will sluggishly offer something “not brilliant”.
Step 2) You look at it all, wait for a pause. And then you do a “stuffing”: say “well, then if there are no other options, let’s call ******” (here say any nonsense that has come into your head, the more delusional the better, and if it is dissonant or causes vulgar associations it's totally awesome). The main thing at the same time is not at all the nonsense that you offer, but that this remark of yours "found an emotional response in the team, leaving no one indifferent."
Step 3) The people will immediately “wake up” and get alarmed: “no, how is it!? sounds kinda gross! that there are no other, normal options? better to call her **** or ***** or ***** or *****.” (the cunning plan worked: the immediately "awakened" brain of the people switches to a creative channel, and you just write down a flurry of super-creative options).
Step 4) From this stream of creative options, just choose the one that everyone likes.
Step 5) Register trademarks, logos, domains, and more.
Step 6)…
Step 7) PROFIT

It was planned to draw pumba on the logo (timon and pumba are the same)

I don’t have big developments, only UserScripts, but even with their names there were problems.
At my job, there are competitions with prizes for choosing product names.
And so, one fairly well-known blogger created a special service VotImenno.ru a long time ago .

Most projects are named like that because there was such a free domain name =)

Yes, in our time it is more difficult to come up with a name, because. it is also often tied to the domain. Therefore, often the name of the project is reduced to the search for free domains

our director constantly registers domain names for himself "for the future". when we start creating a new project, we just take one of the domains that fits the meaning :)
