How can VKontakte and other social networks find out when a person was last online?

There is one person with whom there has been no connection for a long time and people are worried. Nothing criminal, nobody owes anything, just like that, humanly. I have him as a friend, but we did not correspond with him (usually the correspondence just shows how long the person has been online). Can I somehow find out when he last visited? Interested in Vkontakte and Facebook in the first place.

For Facebook, I don't know.
