How can ExpressJS + ReactJS be friends?

There is a website that runs on express and ejs-locals. I would like to switch to React. Is it possible to make friends between these two frameworks? (I'm new to React, watched a couple of videos)

Yes, write a REST API in Express and access the API from the client.
You can even do server side rendering.
