How can CSS sprites be generated?

I am doing a project on Yii2 using LESS, I was interested in the question - is it possible to somehow (semi) automate the generation of sprites? I think it would be ideal to have a console utility that could take graphic files from a given directory, and output one PNG and .less with mixins, which I would import in my main style file

Oh sure. There are good solutions that generate sprites. Also available as grunt and gulp plugins.
