How can a developer make a nice mobile app design?

I made an iOS application, but before putting it in the app store (and showing it to a potential employer as a demonstration of development skills), you need to make it look pleasing to the eye. But my design skills are only enough to draw a house with a tree and the sun. I would like to know how to learn how to make at least such a design that will not hurt the eyes, namely: the correct font, its size, color scheme, position of elements on the screen, and stuff like that. Perhaps there is some kind of universal guide or training materials for people like me. I know about Sketch.
