If you have a thousand identical servers, then pappet will allow you to configure them and change the config very quickly and easily, but if you are a simple layman with three servers, then writing puppet recipes for configuring servers will never pay off for you.

The main idea is configuration automation. You only describe what you want to configure and how you want to configure it, and everything else is done for you. A more stable and simpler alternative to thousands of shell scripts.
If it is difficult to figure it out right away and porridge - try puppet on some example.
