How and why can you use commondatastorage.googleapis.com?

There are a lot of links on the Internet to files from this site (and completely heterogeneous ones). How were they put in there? What for? Is there an open API for it? Where to get it? Why isn't it googled?

commondatastorage.googleapis.com is the storage address for Google App Engine

This is a Google Storage analogue of Amazon S3, a separate project and not related to AppEngine (there is a special BlobStore for storing large files for it). Although you can use it in the GS project, look at prices , fill out the form , wait for an invite, take the Boto library (for python), generate keys and use it.
