Hourly pay for design, what do you think?
I work on project payment, lately I haven’t been rushing with stability, I calculated in 20 days 2-3 days are not taken into account for payment, if for example, it’s easy to navigate the time and price tag for the project on trifles like a business card, then for a site without a final T3 and a search stage options and constant improvements, a lot of shortcomings in payment begin, and you can’t always tell exactly in terms of the timing for making changes.
1. what do you think?
2. Do you customize all projects for hourly pay?
3. What do you include in the price tag per hour?
4. How do customers feel about hourly?
5. What do you think the time is? ps does not suit the option when the client sits down on his software and looks at a bunch of personal information.

I came to this decision:
Under mas os there is a timing application that looks insanely simple, but the beauty is in the details.
It will help you find out the exact time spent on any project without unnecessary gestures.
After installation, the program will show undefined processes, for clarity, they need to be scattered into categories.
The first thing I did was create a working directory and dump all the programs that I use at work.
Further, at the beginning of a new work or at the end, it doesn’t matter, this is the beauty, we go into the working directory and see the working programs, each shows the time that I spent in it.
If we expand the processes, we will see all the folders and files with which we worked in these applications.
That is, for example, we worked on two projects today and they can be split at this stage and tracked separately. You just need to pull out the necessary files.
Creating a New Project
Now, in order to understand exactly how much I spent on doing work on a particular project, we drag and drop only working files or folders from the working directory into a new project. Dragging creates a copy of the activity.
After I dragged the js-app-starter folder into the project I created earlier, I get applications that still worked with these folders as a bonus, that is, I immediately see that I spent 12 seconds getting into this folder through finder and opened the package. json through Sublime Text which took another 2 seconds.
After carrying out all the manipulations, with a clear conscience, I can say exactly how much I spent on a specific project or on a specific file.
- Folders
- Files
- Links
- Applications
In my work I use photoshop, sketch, finder, and safari, and if you do not track all this together, then there will be no clear picture.
From experience, sometimes more than 50% of the time of the entire project is spent in the browser in search of the desired image, font, etc.
In this tracker, you can track links and even transitions within a domain.
It took me 1 hour and 3 minutes to write this post and pick the tracker.
Total active time 4 hours 10 minutes. and to the second you can determine what I spent this time on.
1. there is no nesting for grouping work projects, I think it will not grow very nicely.
2. Created project is displayed both today and tomorrow, that is, created today will be displayed yesterday. Maybe this is not in the paid version did not check.
3. No full-featured trial
The application is free to track yesterday and today, but in the paid version you can jump on the calendar for any day.
Oh yes, let's imagine that after the completion of the project, edits came in, we dug a little more into the project and spent additional time. In my case, I double-checked this so as not to forget anything and reached the stage of publishing a post.
and have already 1 hour 50 minutes…
After edits:
47 minutes to make corrections.
That's it, it's easier to live like this when estimating the cost of edits.
And then with this knowledge you need to do something and optimize the work, good luck and success to everyone.
+ while I posted 24 minutes
Design is one of my areas. I take payment for the task, I pre-specify the number of edits and their complexity: change pale pink to pale pink or put another font from Google Fonts - I do 3-4 such corrections free of charge. If they ask for a more complex alteration, then for money, but again, I take it not for an hour, but for the fact of implementation. It's not convenient for me to work on time. There are simple tasks and there are complex tasks. You have to work by analogy with cloud hosting: 100% of brain time - A rub / hour, 100% of manual work - B rub / hour, unwillingness to do this work - In ruble / hour ... And from all this add up a long and complex formula. .. It's easier to figure out whether, say, 1000 rubles will cover my expenses and whether this thousand will satisfy my pride. For example, for posting finished materials on the site, I would ask about 500 rubles / hour, and for programming - from 2000 rubles / hour. Again, as I said, I will evaluate the complexity of the task and estimate the time, the customer will pay only for the result, even if I spend not an hour, but three - my cant.
As for large projects, when it is obvious that 100% revisions will be, I have the following scheme:
The customer wants the exact time and cost - it is logical.
To estimate these values, the required exact tasks (TS) are logical.
Therefore, "large and complex" projects are always evaluated strictly according to the tasks described in the TOR or brief. Deviation from the TOR for more than X-minutes* means either:
a) rewriting the TOR taking into account new tasks (edits) reviewing the time and cost, including the cost of working on a new TOR.
b) we include an hourly rate (as simple in a taxi). At the same time, the tariff works until we return to the TOR or complete the project at an hourly rate or choose option a).
If you bring this information to the customer in a way that is accessible to him before starting workthere are no problems.
