Firstly, VPS is one of the types of hosting.
Secondly, nothing depends on the number of goods - modern DBMS do not give a damn about these ridiculous thousands - they easily turn over billions of records.
Thirdly, VPS implies that you will deal with administration yourself. In shared/vip-shared, etc. - hosting specialists administer for you.
Fourthly, the hosting itself costs such a penny that you can take one and then easily move to another
. Fifthly, I would take vip shared for a start
