Headache: is layout under IE6 relevant?
According to statistics from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and LiveInternet , the number of visitors to websites using Internet Explorer 6 is falling. Any coder knows how difficult it is sometimes to make the site look right on this browser. In this regard, the question arises - is it important to take into account the layout for IE6 today and how expedient will it be to do this next year?
By the way, over the past few months, more and more often I began to see sites that, when opened through IE6, a separate HTML page appears with an offer to download a newer version of the browser or a completely different browser, and many layout designers charge a separate fee for site layout under IE6. Basically, I am of the same opinion.
I would like to hear your answer to this question. Thank you.

No, don't waste your time. In addition, help to defeat this beast.
In Russia, its share is about 2% of Runet users ( Proof ).
If the project is aimed at English-speaking users, then in North America the share is about the same. For other regions, click on the options.
IMHO, users of 6 donkeys are corporate systems and shabby Internet cafes in tourist villages in the Crimea.
IE6 user money is no different than Firefox and Opera money
Support for IE6 is no longer required, just hang up a stub with a suggestion to install the correct browser.
Before I was a lamer in layout, IE6 was a problem for me. When I learned to type well under IE6, Opera became a problem for me. But literally half a year after I learned to type in IE6, I was taken under the wing of a studio that considered IE6 an outdated browser. Since then, and this is about 10 months, everyone who knocked on my door for layout did not require IE6. Of course, if they require IE6, then this is at least an additional payment. But I think that if you are not a big company, then you should forget about IE6, because the money of people with other browsers is no different from the money of users of IE6.
Well, Google with its GWT refused to support IE6. Microsoft is, afaik, encouraging the move to fresh Windows. On Windows XP, IE should also be updated. But anyway, it's up to you. Do you need such an audience or not. Maybe what she gives will not pay off the cost of supporting IE6.
Well, the last: IE6 - horror, horror, horror :)
It is not necessary to support, in extreme cases, take normal money for this work.
The browser update message does not need to be done, users already know that they have junk, but they most likely cannot update. It is better to make it so that the site works more or less tolerably in older browsers, even if not as in new ones, but so that the site works.
Forcibly moving a user to a site for legacy browsers with an offer to upgrade, or to a mobile site in the case of mobile clients, is a mockery of users, especially if in the end it does not work out to go to a normal site.
stubs for the option, support IE6 without prettiness, but so that the user can get information from the site, read the text is not such a problem.
How do you like some kind of stub?
You are using a browser created in 2001. Even cars in our country change more often. Internet Explorer 6 does not meet today's standards for security, speed, and reliability. For your personal safety and the security of your data, we strongly recommend updating your browser. By installing any of the more modern browsers, you will increase the speed of opening pages by an order of magnitude, security, and you will have access to the latest web technologies that are not supported by Internet Explorer 6. To correctly display the information contained on the site, we recommend updating Internet Explorer or installing any other browser: Opera , Firefox , Google Chrome .
2% ... Although clearly visible, an authoritative source. But I just can't believe it's so small. Just these "corporate systems and shabby Internet cafes", it seems to me, make up much more than 2 percent. Again, IMHO, and I'm actually happy if THIS statistic doesn't lie.
I advise my client to look into the statistics and see how many people with IE6 visit the site. Almost everyone refuses support or asks that the content be displayed more or less normally and readable =) You can display a pop-up warning suggesting that you download a normal browser.
Now I do a lot of typesetting for Western customers. The minimum requirements are IE8. In the seventh donkey, only functionality is checked, blocks that have moved somewhere are no longer considered. When such work began, I felt myself in paradise.
For domestic customers, IE7 support is usually sufficient.
in a corporate environment, the standard operating system is Windows XP, which has IE6 as the default browser. if your users are not office workers, but for example young people under 16, you may not adapt the design for IE6.
we have not been defaulting to IE6 for a year already - a pop-up notification is displayed that the site may not be displayed correctly, it is suggested to download a modern browser or open the site anyway.
during this time, only 1 (one!) client asked to add layout for 6-ku.
save studio time=money.
The question of relevance depends on who you write for.
- If your project is for Internet users, then you can safely score on support. I personally give out the “Oops, you have a very old browser” page.
- If your product is for use on the intranet of a corporation, then inquire about this network. It is quite possible that most of the users are using IE6.
Pay attention to the target audience. Moreover, not only by age, but by the nature of their activities.
If these are young people (teenagers, students) 16-23 years old, then forget about IE 6.
If the clients are mostly corporates, office workers, then do it under IE 6 too. Many companies have old browsers and do not allow them to be changed.
In general, Microsoft calls to forget IE 6 .
