I have Upwork Pro experience, I have 1 current contract. In my opinion - the game is not worth the candle, personally my impressions are generally neutral / negative - everything can be different for you.
1. The hiring process is taking too long. I had a long correspondence + interview with a recruiter from Upwork, then the acceptance of an additional agreement with Upwork pro. Then an interview with the project manager, and only then a technical (and rather superficial, in my opinion) interview with the director. As a result, from the moment I started the first contact with the recruiter to the start of the actual work, it took me more than 1.5 months
2. Upwork commission on these projects is 20% instead of the standard 10%, they will remind you about this more than once. In theory, this is compensated by your increased rate on pro orders. I didn’t become impudent here, I just calculated my rate taking into account the commission of 20% (maybe it was worth asking for more, the companies that are looking for it are probably ready to pay more).
3. Companies that are looking for freelancers are usually looking for large, long-term projects, almost remote work. For me personally, this turned out to be a minus, since I want more flexibility in terms of choosing a customer, and not stupidly working for 1 client for 40 hours a week.
As a result - if you are ready to wait with the device and work mainly for 1 monopoly client, then it's worth a try. Otherwise - I would refrain from such an option.
It's easy to get there 1% of the best freelancers from the mobile development section, every year odesk sends letters of happiness if you entered the 10%, 5%, 3%, 1% of the best freelancers, the last time I was in the 5%
orientation to a permanent job, so there are not many orders.
