Hardware RAID?
I’m choosing a hardware raid controller compatible with Vmware ESX for my Sunfire X2200 M2 and I don’t understand how to distinguish a hardware raid controller from a software raid controller, what is the difference between hba and megaraid (at least in the lsi terminal)?
My final task is this. I have two disks and need ESX (and any other OS) to see them as one disk in raid1 and not have access to the real disks.

hba - just extends the ability to connect devices, sometimes has the ability to create raids. It is better to take a full-fledged raid controller with BBU.
HBA is a Host Bus Adapter, i.e. actually an adapter from different tires. For example SAS-PCI-E. Usually does not have RAID, but software in drivers can do it.
Distinguishing hardware from software is easy. The hardware has a special XOR processor on board. Its frequency can be found in the charts. Well, secondary signs of a hardware controller are the presence of cache memory and the ability to install BBU or flash cache.
Don't torture your brain. Just take the compatibility chart published by VMware and buy what is listed there.
