Hard drive crash?

I own a DELL XPS 13 2015 with a 256Gb SSD.
I want to install Linux.
Advise which Linux OS to install and how to properly partition an SSD and is it worth it?
Is the SSD enough or do I need to buy an external screw?

This is what you need to ask. Who but you knows how much data you have, and how much disk you need.

Distribution. (ready to catch tomatoes) - Ubuntu. Because there are a lot of users - there is someone to ask a question.
Splitting. if you put on the entire disk - it is quite enough to put "by default". a small piece will be cut off for swap, the rest will go under /.
The volume of the SSD is enough, and there will still be.

Debian.
/, swap and /home separate partitions.

And why puzzle, Ubuntu, if for the first time, the very thing is to see how the operating system does everything for itself in the machine, I would also use LVM.

Let me tell you about my configuration. I have 64gb ssd + 512gb hdd on my laptop. Memory is more than enough.
1) I split it into /home~31gb and /~25gb. This is very convenient, because if something happens to Ubuntu, we can easily roll up a new version, and all the necessary data will be saved. This breakdown has saved me many times.
2) Swap I left 8gb, OP I also have 8gb
3) I made symlinks on hdd for folders Downloads, Desktop, Images, Music
Why put home on ssd? Because this approach gives a very large performance boost, since many programs store their cache / configs on it. The same gems for ruby are in the home folder, which gives a significant boost to rails and other applications.
I have been using the laptop for 2 years, until I complain, the disks do not overflow.
