If I'm going to transmit 24 bits of information using a self-correcting Hamming code. How many check bits will be used in the encoded message?

With minimal redundancy, that is, with the ability to determine 2 errors and reliably correct one - 29bit. It's probably better to equalize by bytes - 32bit, but this is still not enough to reliably correct two errors.
