Graphql and JSON, what is the fundamental difference?

I recently looked at the source of one project on GitHub, there is a backend to respond data using GraphQL, why not good old JSON? Googled but didn't understand why this Facebook technology takes bread from JSON and REST?

Information comes exactly in the volume in which it is requested.
Unlike REST, the response to a request does not contain unnecessary data.
