Graphical frontend for Debian?

I want to put Debian on a laptop and I have a choice of a graphical shell. The laptop is quite old, Gnome sometimes freezes on Ubuntu. Recommend something lightweight and pleasing to the eye).

for the desktop version, choosing from debian and ubunta, I would definitely recommend linux mint
. It has long surpassed its ancestor ubuntu in popularity, and even more so in terms of convenience
