Google Cyrillic?

Why can the main page of Google show such squiggles instead of Cyrillic? Ubuntu 10.10, Firefox 3.6, Russian is selected in the Google settings.

and exactly Russian is worth it? I somehow lost myself on the first in the list, Afrikaans, it seems that there were very similar letters.

This phenomenon has nothing to do with pirates. This is Cherokee (try, for example, to look for these symbols).
I got it a few months ago. The key here is the Ubuntu+Firefox bundle. What exactly was the matter, it was not possible to find out then. There are a couple of relevant topics - on the Ubuntuforums and on the Mozilla support . The first one in post #7 has links to a couple of bug reports - perhaps this is due to incorrect handling (message) of Firefox's language settings.
