GITLAB & Subtree - is it possible?

How to create a subtree in gitlab? Is it just to specify Import existing repository when creating a project, or do you need some additional gestures?
My problem looks exactly like here , and to solve it, I decided to go the subtree route, but it's not entirely clear how this will work.

You have to use the console client. I tested git-subtree on Git version 1.8.1.msysgit.1 on Windows.
I found a request in the tortoisegit-dev group to add support for git-subtree dated February 27, 2014. I don't think it will be implemented very soon. On Windows, it's very convenient to use Git from PowerShell with posh-git .
