When I do git status or sourcetree does it automatically, I get the error
error: inflate: data stream error (unknown compression method)
fatal: failed to read object a6cbf8ee9712f58427bba10bf816046315e2f506: Invalid a rgument
What could be the reason? How can I fix this?

Try git-fsck. It looks like your repository is broken.
