Game designer in 2019?

What are the requirements for a game designer?
Is the ability to write documents for games enough, or do you still need to have good skills in programming and modeling 3D objects? Network, platforms, graphics, design?
And what is the direction in game design.
I know I'm breaking the one question per topic rule, but the questions are related.
If possible, write, direction - requirements

Requirements for a game designer are usually specified in the vacancy for a game designer.
Google vacancies and read what is required there - requirements may be different in each office. Read about 20-30 vacancies, average.

Technical skills for a game designer are a big plus, but are not strictly required. Recently there was an interesting article on this topic on "cuffs", read: https://gdcuffs.com/how-to-become-a-gd/

Is the ability to write documents for games enough

The main skill of a game designer is, of course, the ability to write documentation and work with Excel .
Not sure if you really know how to write documentation. In general, this is easy to check: if you made a GDD for a feature, and not a single member of the team (at least 10 people, including the authorities) had smart questions, then you are a cool game designer. By the way, the documentation is different, and even specific development documents differ in structure and design, although you probably already know this.
All other skills are helpful but not required. For example, if the game is about racing, and you are an experienced driver, then this skill will be a plus for you. Like any other skill or profession. Accountant? Sociologist? Political scientist? Everything will come in handy. In a particular game project, something may be more important.
Programming is also a plus, like any other skill. Specifically, from programming, systems thinking is important , but not only. The game designer can sometimes, especially on small teams, take on the role of the programmer:
The rest of the areas of game development that you understand only mean that it will be easier for you to write understandable documentation for the relevant specialists (3d modelers, level designers, ui / ux-s, etc.)
As for the directions, everything is here simply. As elsewhere, if something can be decomposed, and the thing is complicated, and there are enough people, then it’s better to do it. For example, one of the DGs can read the balance (numbers) and do just that.
