Gallery thumbnails take up a lot of space

It’s not clear why, but with about 170+ photos, the gallery thumbnail file takes +650mb
This file is /mnt/sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails/.thumbdata* and glitches often occur because of it, manual deletion helps, but there may be means to make it was not created or at least weighed less (a friend has only 22mb with an equal number of photos)?
