Freelancing Responsibility for WordPress?

Hello. Help me please. With a friend (roommate) we are going to start freelancing. I'm good at typesetting, I've mastered the basics of JavaScript and Jquery. He has been studying php and MySql for half a year now. We decided to start by creating sites on WordPress. Now we are thinking about how to properly distribute responsibilities. In fact, I do the front-end, he is the back-end. What do we need to learn in order to work as a team?

To work out the process, make yourself a portfolio of a couple of sites - and you will fill your hand, and there will be something to show customers.
PS
For small freelance sites, it is easier to divide into a designer and a front-backer. Not so much work there. And it makes sense to separate coding on more or less complex projects.
