Fonts on the site, does it affect the loading of the site?

Good day. Asked such a question.
- How are fonts loaded from the browser side? I see it this way. The css file is connected, the fonts are indicated in it. and the browser pulls them up already.
Let's say 3 styles, each approximately weighs ~ 50kb. The result is already 150kb.
- How does this affect the loading of the site?
- Are fonts loaded asynchronously with the site?
- And is it worth pulling custom fonts into the project at all? Or use some kind of system?

Influence. On some sites, you can see how the page is loaded, and then the fonts are loaded. They are loaded depending on where they are indicated, although you can configure asynchronous loading of all statics. Custom fonts add personality, but don't overload your site with them. Some browsers require special font files (eot, wof..). To obtain them, you can use special generators. For example https://transfonter.org/ . Also, when you connect fonts, you can specify a flag that, if there is a local version of the font, it will not be downloaded from the site
