Flexible architecture for forum user groups?

Hey!
The question arose about what is the best architectural solution for a user groups forum?
In the general case, we have many users and many user groups, each user can be in several user groups at the same time.
Example: A
user is a member of 3 usergroups

1) Should I show an avatar with a caption?
2) By what logic is it calculated?
