Firefox autoComplete - how to disable partially?

The new version of url auto-completion is infuriating - before it was just a drop-down list, and now also a hint in the line. I use url aliases, when one or two letters lead to the desired site - it's faster than searching in bookmarks. But now these one or two letters are auto-completed to some unexpected site ...
And if you turn off auto-completion, firefox stops and gives out a pop-up, which is also inconvenient.
Is there a middle ground? Drop-out - yes, auto-completion in a line - no!

It seems what you need is browser.urlbar.autoFill = false in about:config
