Files cannot be opened from network folder in ubuntu 10.10

On the win2003 machine there is a shared document folder which is mounted by other ubuntu linux machines when booted via fstab. The problem is that starting from version 10.10 it is not possible to edit files located in this folder directly. gimp doesn't open pictures, geany text files, but geqie pictures. Previous distributions, at least 10.04, didn't have this problem. Copying files to a local computer, and then uploading them back to the network is somehow inconvenient. Moreover, some programs still open files over the network (for example, gedit or eog).

Is it possible to make all programs work in 10.10 with a network folder like before?

What about folder access? In Ubuntu 10.10, my girlfriend started having similar issues with windows drives due to the drives having the wrong owner and ro rights. In 10.04, this really did not happen. It was treated by remounting from root and changing the owner.

I advise you to make a downgrade to 10.04. Or in 10.10 something appeared necessary for you?
I recently downgraded from 11.04 to 10.04.
