Dear users, I have encountered the following problem:
7-zip archivers, which can be picked up by the GUI file roller, do not understand the encoding of my Windows rar archive with Cyrillic file names inside. The standard forum remedy is apt-get remove rar unrar , then sudo apt-get install unrar . What is scary, as a result of the last operation, the cow reports that some components from the rar-nonfree package will be used to install unrar. Since operations are carried out at a company, a legal entity, the question arises about the legality of use. How to protect yourself and be sure that you are not using something illegal: At least in this case.

The non-free repository contains packages that do not comply with the Debian Free Software Guidelines . With unrar, this happened, as I understand it, due to some restrictions imposed by its source code license. You can use unrar freely and unrestrictedly, as written in license.txt, located in the archive on the official website.
