Fast and secure alternative to FTP?

What protocol for connecting to the server (shared) can be faster than FTP?
For example, FTPS, SFTP, etc.
The task is to speed up work with remote web files and secure the connection.
And in general, connecting via FTP today is generally not safe in terms of interception by third parties?

FTP is a very old and completely insecure protocol, invented in the days when the trees were big and the beer was delicious The Internet was a secure environment.
Now we need something VCS - fancy git, not so fancy svn, etc.
