External SSD vs HDD?

I don’t follow the technologies for the development of drives, but I suppose that everything is dynamically changing there and what was relevant yesterday is already bad manners today.
I want to buy an external drive as a gift, but I don’t know which technology to choose: SSD or HDD. But, approximately, I assume the conditions of use: Windows XP, USB 2.0
How much does it cost to buy an SSD in such conditions? Because I remember that problems with write optimization were solved only in Windows 7. Also, I know that this external drive will be heavily used, so how relevant is it to take an SSD with its limited overwrite cycle?
Perhaps these problems have already been resolved and you can take an SSD without a twinge of conscience?

If it’s for file storage, then ssd with their “norm” of 256GB is far from hdd with their “norm” of 2TB. There are no large household ssds.
The limited overwriting cycle of ssd in terms of home use is no longer relevant, it will be enough for 5-10 years.
The problem with windows xp is solved by drivers (at least for Intel) and by running the “cleanup” utility through the task manager, plus this problem has never been supercritical.
If there are more than enough ssd volumes, and the money is not critical (256GB ssd for 6 thousand versus 2 TB of screws for 3 thousand), then take ssd unequivocally and without a twinge of conscience. In addition to volume and price, there are practically no drawbacks.
ps: despite the usb2.0 usage scenario, it definitely makes sense to take a box with usb3.0 support.

As a gift - only SSD. Otherwise, what a gift.

In my opinion, there is no point in an external SSD. Of the advantages, only mechanical reliability.

For three years now, there have been no hdd disks for me, only ssd, but as with hdd, no one has canceled the backup.
And then the eternal stories I had a large disk, something is wrong, help restore everything, there are no backups.
