Element layout algorithms - what to read?

I'm wondering what are the algorithms for arranging UI elements? In other words, there is for example CSS which, in addition to "drawing" ones (background, color, border etc.), also has positioning tools (flex, float, position, max-width) - are there any algorithms not tied to the web? Let's say what buttons can be placed on a desktop application (not specific implementations in the form of ready-made components are of interest, but algorithms with code examples how to implement them).
