Educational literature. What books will help a beginner?

Hello. At school and university, I did a good job with programming, but on my own I still can’t go deep into learning languages and gaining programming skills. It interferes with the lack of understanding where to start and what to undertake. It was easier at a university or school, there was always a task. Please advise the literature with which it would be worth starting the training, and, if possible, the main directions in which it is worth delving in order to start self-study.

To begin with, I would advise you the book "Learning Java" there are also practical tasks, the book will not make you bored, then you can take something more serious, for example Herbert Schildt Java 8 (Beginner's Edition), I do not advise you to start reading this book right away if you do not have the basics, in addition, I can suggest reading the book "Data Structures and Algorithms in Java" (Better to read as an addition), it is written clearly and is also suitable for beginners.

Decide on a language to start with.
If C++ - textbook "Prata S. - The C++ Programming Language. Lectures and Exercises - 2011".

C# - Troelsen. (2015) I myself studied from his book. Everything is described quite clearly, and most importantly, I liked the structure of the chapters. Everything is in order.
