Does your company use an access system?

I would like to know from those who work in the office whether their company has an access system or are all passwords and valuable information transmitted in the old fashioned way via corporal/skype/mail? How to independently organize such a system, what to write on and how to design? Does it make sense to "bother" over this for the sake of security?
