Does the backend need to know the frontend?

Does a backend developer need to know the frontend (angular.js, react.js and similar frameworks)?

Not necessarily, but to some extent it is useful to know. Even if not full stack.
First, to better understand what is wanted and expected from you. For example, which API format will be more convenient for the task assigned to the team.
Secondly, sometimes tasks arise when you need to make a prototype of the front-end, which may grow into something (or not). And it takes longer for a frontender to explain what you want than to do it yourself. A typical example is some kind of admin panel for the prototype of an internal project. The API did - a more or less decent front for the demonstration was washed down, handed over to the fronteder.

if you are a back on a node, the probability of finding yourself a pure back of a task is small, the technology is not the most popular.
