Does Petya encrypt files with a modified extension?

Two questions about recent events.
1. Let's say there is a test.docx file. If you rename it to test.xxx, will the virus recognize docx in it and encrypt it or not? Same with other extensions.
2. Images remained intact after the attack. Is it possible to sew an archive into an image to save a hidden archive?
